HFMA is the nation’s leading membership organization for healthcare financial management executives and leaders. HFMA members can be found in all areas of the healthcare system including hospitals, managed care organizations, physician practices, accounting firms and insurance companies.

In the chapter, regional, and national level, HFMA helps healthcare finance professionals meet the challenges of the modern healthcare environment by: providing education, analysis, and guidance; building and supporting coalitions with other healthcare associations to ensure accurate representation of the healthcare finance profession; educating a broad spectrum of key industry decision makers on the intricacies and realities of maintaining fiscally healthy healthcare organizations and working with a broad cross-section of stakeholders to improve the healthcare industry by identifying and bridging gaps in knowledge, best practices, and standards.

Volunteer Opportunities/Chapter Committees

General Description:

The Education/Program Committee is responsible for planning and coordinating all chapter educational sessions, including speakers, attendee registration, site arrangements and payment, and meeting follow-up.  The Education/Program Committee will include a Chairperson (current year President Elect), Co-chairperson (current year Vice President) and at least 3 other committee members. The Education/Program Committee is charged with designing all educational programs for the chapter.  This includes four education seminars per year. In addition, this committee has oversight over the Education Road Shows and ensures representation on the statewide planning committee. The Education Committee incorporates education from the following major functions: General, PFS, and Finance.

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Provide tentative educational program schedule to the Board with proposed dates and topics.
  • Establish committee goals, which may include net program income, member and total attendance, and member educational hours.  Establish a monitoring system and report results to Board.
  • Develop and coordinate the chapter’s educational sessions during the year on a variety of topics to meet the members’ needs and meet the chapter’s  goals.
  • Ensure that appropriate information is reported to HFMA National on a timely basis.

General Description:    

The purpose of the Membership Committee is to provide coordination and awareness of member needs.  This is done through an annual member survey, dissemination, and compilation of evaluation forms from each education program.  The Membership Committee is also charged with new member recruitment and member retention.  The Membership Committee welcomes all new members to the committee, either personally or through a welcome packet and coordinates the presentation of HFMA 101 at various educational seminars. The Membership Committee is responsible for building and maintaining the chapter’s membership.  The committee will coordinate the chapter’s membership campaign to fulfill the chapter’s goal of new members for the upcoming year.  The Membership Committee will include a Chairperson and at least 2 other committee members.

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain process to identify new members through the educational sessions and chapter newsletter.  Contact each potential candidate at least once during the year for possible membership.
  • Develop and maintain process to reinstate lapsed members. Contact each lapsed member at least once during the year for possible renewal.
  • Work with appropriate Board member to identify healthcare-related organizations to promote membership and the chapter.
  • Contact colleges and inquire about potential healthcare-related classes and the ability to recruit student members.
  • Develop a year-end summary of activities and objectives for the current year.

General Description:

The Communications Committee works with all committees to provide communication and education for members through the chapter social media and newsletter.  This includes promoting upcoming events, and publishing articles written by HFMA members. The Communications/Newsletter Committee is responsible for the coordination and electronic publication of 4 newsletters for chapter members.  The Communications/Newsletter committee will include a Chairperson and at least 2 other committee members.

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Establish and publish a list of newsletter publication and submission deadlines for the year.
  • Coordinate the publication of at least four quarterly chapter newsletters per year.
  • Volunteer materials or ideas for the newsletter, website, and packets
  • Establish and maintain social networking media relations such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter

General Description:

The Certification Committee works to increase member certification through mentoring and support.  This includes informing and encouraging HFMA members to become certified and establish fellowship status. The Chairperson will ensure that the membership has access to the information regarding certification materials/websites.  The certification committee will include a Chairperson and at least 2 other committee members.

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains processes to encourage members to become certified, to encourage them to maintain their certifications once they are earned, and to act as proctors for chapter testing events.
  • Work with chapter members and HFMA National to ensure that members submit complete testing information so they can be properly registered to test.
  • Work with local resources to locate appropriate facilities for offering Internet-based examinations.  Such resources can include using local college computer labs or educational facilities at local hospitals.
  • Work with chapter Program Committee and Board to establish test dates within the chapter to allow members to take the certification exams during the year.  These test dates can be chosen to coincide with other chapter activities, such as a program, to allow synergies to develop between testing and other activities.
  • Work within the chapter to offer appropriate resources in support of certification for the chapter.  Such resources can include study groups and group overviews of certification requirements and ways to prepare for certification.

General Description:

The chapter Job Referral Chairman is the chapter’s primary point of contact for members who are seeking new employment, and for employers seeking to hire healthcare financial management professionals.  This position may require the ability to hold information in confidence, and to provide discrete, tactful input.

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains processes to encourage members to confide when they are involved in a job search, or to inform the chairman when there is an opening at their place of employment.
  • Works with members of the chapter, other chapter job referral chairs, and HFMA National to assist members and employers in taking advantage of both the formal and informal job market, and thereby enhance the value of HFMA membership.
  • Works with members to help them make use of all job referral and job assistance resources available through the HFMA Job Bank and other sources as appropriate.
  • Works with recruiters as appropriate to ensure that job information is provided to appropriate individuals within the chapter, and always takes care to maintain the confidentiality necessary for a job search.
  • Works within the chapter to offer appropriate resources in support of job referral for the chapter.  Such resources can include listing jobs in the newsletter or web site, reviewing resumes, and providing information on jobs that may be available.

General Description:

The Social Committee works with all committees to provide successful social events for members at education programs and various times as approved by the Board. This includes promoting attendance to HFMA members. The Social Committee is responsible for the themes and activities for each social gathering. The Chairperson will ensure that the social events negotiations and contracts are approved by the board.  The social committee will include a Chairperson and at least 2 other committee members.         

Goals, Objectives, and Responsibilities:

  • Determining a location for the social
  • Coordinating transportation for off-site socials
  • Creating a flyer for the meeting packets

General Description:

Balances the financial strength and viability for the chapter with a cost-effective method for our corporate sponsors to gain visibility in the chapter’s healthcare marketplace.  Sponsorship funds generated shall be targeted to underwrite the cost of chapter meetings and events; and to encourage and support other services, which promote the objectives of the chapter. The Chair will also work closely with the statewide sponsorship committee to establish and maintain statewide sponsorship guidelines and funding.

General Description:    

The Audit Committee handles the annual financial review submitted to the national office.   This includes coordinating with the treasurer throughout the year to ensure proper records are being kept. The Chairperson will ensure that the yearend audit is completed within Davis Chapter Management System requirements. The audit committee is approved by the Board of Directors and consists of Past President, President, Treasurer, and other members as selected by the BOD.
