Care for opioid overdose patients resulted in $1.94 billion in annual hospital costs for emergency department (ED), inpatient, and ICU care across 647 healthcare facilities nationwide, according to a recent Premier Inc. analysis.

The average cost for an overdose patient who was treated and released totaled $504, but the average cost rose to $11,731 for those who were treated and admitted to a hospital and $20,500 for those who required ICU care.

Government payers took on much of the burden for the cost of care, with Medicare and Medicaid paying for two-thirds of opioid overdose care costs.
