HFMA now offers AI Governance Micro-Credential for healthcare finance professionals

November 6, 2024 10:55 am

As HFMA prepared to introduce its first micro-credential for healthcare finance professionals, we sat down with Todd Nelson, HFMA’s director of professional practice and partner relationships, to learn more.

HFMA’s Todd Nelson says, “HFMA micro-credentials are shorter in length and more focused on a subset of a particular content area than our more robust certification programs.”

Q: HFMA just came out with its first micro-credential. Can you tell us more about it?

Todd Nelson: HFMA launched its first micro-credential training course Nov. 4 in partnership with Alignmt AI to help healthcare finance professionals stay updated on the latest technologies and trends.

For us, when reviewing member feedback surveys and listening to what was on the minds of executive council members and what others were saying at our live events, we found that AI rose to the top of topics members wanted more information about.

The course covers these subjects: AI Governance Committee Operations, AI Governance Policies, Enterprise AI Risk Mitigation, Conflict of Interest Standards I, Incident Response for AI Applications and Whistleblower Protection.

Q: What was the impetus for offering micro-credentials? What are the benefits?

A micro-credential provides a great way for HFMA members to receive high-quality topical training and digital recognition.

Nelson: We have been hearing from members that they would like the option for certain short-form training, offering digital recognition of achievement. A micro-credential is a great way to provide high-quality topical training and digital recognition, and it’s definitely another way for healthcare professionals to upgrade their skillsets.

Our AI Governance Micro-Credential can help healthcare finance professionals lead in the ethical and compliant adoption of AI technologies and enhance their organization’s credibility and readiness for regulatory changes.

The benefits are that micro-credentials are shorter in length and more focused on a subset of a particular content area than our more robust certification programs. And once you earn a micro-credential, you’ve earned it — unlike certifications that require regular recertification.

Q: How can members prove they have earned an HFMA micro-credential?

Nelson: A digital badge is awarded for successful completion of all the courses and assessments for all courses. If an individual portion of the course — for example, the AI Governance Policies is taken and successfully completed — a certificate of completion of that portion of the course is provided.

We are planning to release other micro-credentials in the areas of revenue cycle and financial management in early 2025.
