My name is Michael Burnett, and I am currently pursuing my MBA/MHA at Georgia State University and reside in Atlanta, Georgia. I received my undergraduate degree in Finance and a minor in Health Policy and Management from the University of Georgia. I currently work full-time as a Financial Analyst for Northside Hospital, where I am the lead analyst over Northside Atlanta’s Operating Budget. I decided to pursue my graduate degree to advance my career in Healthcare Administration and develop a broad and current understanding of the healthcare industry. Georgia State has provided me with many tools which I will utilize throughout my career, including healthcare operations, legal landscape, strategic management, and finance/economics. I have a strong passion for healthcare finance and promoting financial literacy within our clinical leaders, and I aspire to use my degrees to lead others and make an impactful change down to the level of quality of patient treatment. I am very excited for HFMA’s student involvement initiative, and I look forward to connecting other students to HFMA’s career development resources.
Mabel Darko is a dedicated healthcare professional born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. Her interest in healthcare was sparked early in life by observing her mother’s significant role as a stationery supplier to local hospitals. HFMA Member Advice to Students Transitioning to a Professional Role
My recommendation is for the book “Indistractible” by Nir Eyal.
While we are fortunate to have the advantage of amazing technology to help us navigate our lives a little easier, it’s becoming more and more apparent how distracting these tools can be. The pings, chirps and alerts that we set up to try to make our days more manageable ultimately thwart our very efforts. In a complete 180 from his original book – Hooked – Nir teaches us how to more successfully live with technology by becoming indistractable to it. Any early careerist – or person, in general – can benefit from learning how to make sure your focus isn’t broken when you have a goal in mind!

Organizational skills. Increasingly professional roles are about managing knowledge and information- lots of it! I highly recommend students identify the organization tool offered by their employer and spend some time understanding the functionally. This time investment will pay dividends. If the tool has a seamless interface between the desktop app and the mobile app- even better! When an idea hits you, having an easily accessible recall place is invaluable. Some popular tools include Microsoft OneNote and Evernote.
