Atlantic General Hospital and Health System in Berlin, Md., has hired James Kanuch, CHFP, MBA, as vice president of finance and CFO. Kanuch, a member of HFMA’s Maryland Chapter, brings 30 years of financial and operational experience to the new role. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of finance at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, where he held a variety of leadership positions over the years.
Kanuch succeeds Cheryl Nottingham, FHFMA, MBA, CPA, who had served as Atlantic General’s CFO from 1998 until her retirement in April. Nottingham also is a member of HFMA’s Maryland Chapter and served as its 2022-2023 president.
“Jim’s varied background in healthcare delivery and his experience leading financial operations will be invaluable as we navigate the complex challenges in our industry,” said Don Owrey, MBA, FACHE, president and CEO of Atlantic General. “I also want to acknowledge the excellent leadership Cheryl Nottingham has provided. She has guided the financial stability of our hospital, and I thank her for her many contributions and the institutional knowledge she will provide to Jim during the transition.”
Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) has announced that Debbie Bloomfield, PhD, CPA, will retire as CFO of at the end of 2024, after more than three decades with the Cincinnati-based health system. Over that time, Bloomfield served in various financial leadership roles before being named as CFO of the health system in 2013. Beginning July 1, Bloomfield will transition from her role as CFO and shift to financial leadership oversight of BSMH’s subsidiary companies until her retirement at the end of the year.
“We have been blessed to have a trusted and seasoned financial leader like Debbie, who committed herself and her team to serving those with great need,” said John Starcher, president and CEO of BSMH. “She worked tirelessly to improve access and kept an eye on long-term sustainability, which she helped to achieve through efficient and effective operations.”
Travis Crum, CPA, current senior vice president of finance at BSMH, has been tapped to assume the role of CFO on July 1. Both Crum and Bloomfield are members of HFMA’s Southwestern Ohio Chapter. Crum also currently serves on HFMA’s national Principles and Practices Board.
Margaret Fontana has new CFO position
Memorial Hospital of Carbon County, a 25-bed critical access hospital located in south central Wyoming, has hired Margaret Fontana, MBA, CPA, as CFO. Previously, she was CFO at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon, N.D., and before that, she served nearly six years as financial controller at J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport, N.C. Fontana is a member of HFMA’s North Carolina Chapter.
Melanie Binder receives community leader award
The Community Roundtable, an organization focused on developing proven strategies for online engagement in customer and employee communities, has awarded a 2023 Community Leadership Award to Melanie Binder. Binder, senior manager of community and council engagement at HFMA, was recognized for her efforts to create and manage HFMA’s online member community.
