Dennis L. Laraway, MBA, officially joined Cleveland Clinic as CFO on March 13. An experienced financial leader, Laraway has held CFO positions at several large integrated health systems, including Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, Texas, and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Most recently, he served as executive vice president and CFO at Banner Health, a $12 billion health system based in Phoenix and one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems.
In announcing the new CFO, Tom Mihaljevic, MD, CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic, cited Laraway’s leadership experience.
“We look forward to welcoming Dennis to our organization,” said Mihaljevic. “He is a proven leader with experience developing business approaches for complex healthcare organizations.”
Laraway is a member of HFMA’s Texas Gulf Coast Chapter.
Matt Elsey named CFO at Prisma Health
Prisma Health in Greenville, South Carolina, has hired Matt Elsey, CPA, as executive vice president and CFO. A member of HFMA’s Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, Elsey has 25 years of financial leadership experience in the healthcare industry. He most recently served as vice president and corporate controller at McLaren Health Care, a large integrated healthcare system in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Elsey began his career in auditing, which included several years in the assurance practice of Ernst & Young.
University of Arkansas appoints Terri Meier as assistant vice chancellor
Terri Meier, CHFP, CRCR, recently joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, as assistant vice chancellor for revenue cycle. In this role, Meier will be responsible for the overall functions of the university’s revenue cycle, including coding, hospital and physician billing, collections and health information management. She previously served as the system director, patient revenue cycle, at University of California San Diego Health. Meier is the current president of HFMA’s San Diego-Imperial Chapter.
St. David’s taps David McKnight as CFO
St. David’s Medical Center, Austin, Texas, has hired David McKnight, MBA, as CFO. A member of HFMA’s Virginia-DC Chapter, McKnight most recently served as CEO of Johnston-Willis Hospital, a 293-bed facility in Richmond, Virginia. Prior to that, he spent six years at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia, first as CFO and later as CEO. As CFO, McKnight invested in key service lines, allowing physicians to perform the market’s first colon resection using robotic technology.
In memoriam: Former National Chair John Pattillo
HFMA joins friends and family in remembering C. John Pattillo, Jr., who died at the age of 87 on Jan. 17 in Tampa, Florida. Pattillo spent his professional career working in the healthcare industry, including service as senior management at a Miami hospital and later in the public health arena. A long-time member of HFMA, Pattillo was a member of the Florida Chapter and served as the Association’s 1983-84 National Chair.
